Bravado at the EGE Expo in Cape Town
NEWS | Abdullah 'anneKsiy' Adam | Bravado | July 26, 2017
We are just a few days short of that time of the year where non Cape Town-ers will be flying down to the mother city to experience the greatest city in South Africa as well as one of the most beloved expos by gamers and geeks, EGE. The Electronic and Gaming Expo (EGE Expo) is THE annual gaming event in Cape Town. It boasts tournaments across most games, including huge tournaments and qualifiers with insane prizes for the bigger titles such as COD and DOTA.
EGE has been held in the CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre) for as long as I can remember and has always attracted huge crowds from all aspects of geekdom. Whether you’re a good old gamer, be it casual or competitive, a weeaboo, a general tech-head or even a family member or friend of one of the aforementioned people, you’ve likely heard of EGE or have at least been there once. I’m going to try and give a bit of an insight as to what Bravado Gaming will be doing at EGE this weekend, as well as a guide to getting around based off of my experiences as well as friends.
First off let’s look at what you should be spending your time with. If you can, try to get on over on a Friday to have a quick overview of the expected layout for the weekend, so you can waste minimal time on the Saturday and Sunday which will definitely have at least a few more people…
If you’re there for technology, there’s plenty to look at. There will be countless exhibitions hosted by your favorite brands and leaders in the tech industry. If you haven’t tried VR (virtual reality) before, that will likely be a very interesting experience, especially if you want to introduce a the loved one you decided to torture for the weekend into the world you are passionate about. It’s a fun ice-breaker to start off the weekend with, be sure to be there as early as possible to avoid the crowds of NPC’s standing nearby.
If you’re like me and are really only worried about gaming or want to unleash your inner weeab or child, you’ll have plenty of side quests to dive into after completing some of the main quests I’ll provide below:
Come and meet Bravado Gaming!
Andreas (Cent) is one of the most amazing gents you will likely ever meet in the gaming world, and so are the people around him. If you can stay within a 3 metre radius of this guy your exp bar will max out after a couple of hours, talk about AOE…
Just say hi!
Don’t be afraid to say hi to your favorite pro players, or even have a bit of a laugh with the ones who aren’t really your favorite. We all have our heroes, as well as the guys or gals we view as villains. Let’s keep things real here, online we will either have some real bromance moments or we might want to strangle the player on the other side of the server. Events like these are where we can use the drop-in drop-out co-op function on the IRL server to level up with some mates, meet new ones or sort out some beef (if anyone plans to have a 1v1 please do it on stage, we all need some action before the McGregor and Mayweather fight).
Spread the word!
Bring as many people as you can for free DLC. You’ll probably unlock the “Maybe games aren’t bad after all” DLC, or if you’re unlucky and have no skill you’ll get the “Unplugging you when we get home” DLC. The odds of the second one are really low, but trust me it’s not an eternal banishment, you’ll always have your mobile games.
Have a blast of a time. We’ve all been invited to boring weddings, parties, movies, the list of boring things we have been invited to are endless. This time gamers have the weekend all to themselves. Pretty much everyone under the roof has the same or a similar passion, it really is the watering hole for nerds, geeks, and super hardcore pro gamers. Let loose and enjoy yourself, no one’s going to judge, that’s the best part!
The cosplay is actually pretty cool, so if you’re into that sort of thing or even remotely interested, it’s genuinely an unforgettable experience… maybe you’ll even find someone to co-op IRL with you.
Those are my main quests for adventure seekers at EGE this weekend, there are just so many things to do and see, but don’t forget the people there. They are probably the best part. Being with like-minded people is a refreshing change for all. So take a break from your scrub Dust 2 MM’s and walk around, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
Time to run through what our Call of Duty and Dota 2 teams will be doing at EGE (stay tuned for updates on Counter Strike);
VS Gaming DOTA2 Masters Main Event
For the Dota 2 guys, it’s crunch time. VS Gaming will be hosting the Dota 2 Masters finals at EGE with a R550 000 prize pool. Our boys will be up against the best of the best, the crème de la crème if you will. If Dota 2 still confuses you (like it does for me), be sure to ask around as you wouldn’t want to miss these games if you are there and can experience the tension live. The line-up we will be using is the same line-up we’ve had for a while now, which includes Frank, RDK, 225, Mikasa and the man with the C on his metaphorical armband, Impackt. They have been working on their game as we would expect, let’s see what they’ll be able to bring home this weekend. Information and schedules of the event can be found by heading over to Zombie Gamer here.
You can also visit the official VS Gaming Facebook page here and Twitter page here for updated and on-the-go information as the event happens. Alternatively, make sure you follow the Bravado Gaming social media channels as we’ll also be updating you with the latest and greatest as the event happens (links found at the end of the article).
ACGL Call of Duty
As far as Call of Duty is concerned, here is what Hameed “Viper” Moosa had to tell me:
Okay so we are just a few days away from EGE, the first major LAN event for Infinite Warfare, and one we’re hoping to dominate. The team has been putting in practice but not as much as we would have liked to due to 2 of our players being busy at the Rush LAN the past weekend and both who have also had their birthdays within the last 3 days. All we can do now is just make sure everyone is physically and mentally ready for the weekend ahead and give it our all.
Players will be flying down to Cape Town on Thursday the 27th and we will be making use of the LAN practice available for teams on Friday. We hope to take the big W but already know that a few teams have been looking good lately so we will not underestimate anyone that we play. We will be giving it our all. – Haameed ‘Viper’ Moosa
The Call of Duty Infinite Warfare tournament at EGE will be hosted by ACGL. It is a round robin type tournament with a total of 18 teams (currently 17 confirmed teams) and has a prize of R40 000 as well as 7 500 XP. More information about the tournament and the schedules can be found by heading over to the ACGL website here. Alternatively, make sure to follow ACGL on their social media for information as the tournament happens. You can find their Facebook page here and their Twitter page here.
All the best to our guys for this weekend as well as to all the competitors. Whether you’re a first time attendee or an EGE vet, Bravado Gaming wishes you a long a prosperous weekend. I’d like to reiterate my advice I gave earlier, have fun, it comes around once a year and is an event for everyone, especially for people like us.
