Why junk food is better fuel for gamers
We all know that stereotypes exist as a result of some human being collating what he sees as being shared traits of a particular group. This means that, yes, somewhere out there; there are a bunch of enormously fat gamers covered in pimples whose diets consist almost solely of Doritos, but here’s the thing:
Junk food provides gamers with more energy AND we choose to eat these fatty, sugar-filled foods because evolution says it’s good for us.
Obviously a sedentary lifestyle involving the consumption of these foods in the majority leads to bad things like heart disease and obesity, but in moderation these unhealthy foods provide the perfect burst of energy required to play a videogame. Fat provides us with 9kiloCalories (kCal) of energy per gram; whereas proteins and carbohydrates provide us with 4kCal of energy per gram. Our ancestors preferred a diet with a high fat content as they would get more energy per unit from these sorts of foods and this preference has been passed onto us through our genes. Incidentally, this genetic preference is the explanation for why unhealthy food tastes so much better. I mean, in most cases, who wouldn’t choose to eat a giant, juicy cheese and bacon burger over an anaemic salad?
It appears that some of the best gaming foods are as follows:
Pizza provides us with the simple sugars of the carbohydrate and is the perfect fuel for games that require slightly longer periods of concentration because if you eat one by yourself, it will take about four hours to digest.
2. Red Bull and other energy drinks
This heading also includes beverages like very strong and sugary coffee. When you’re feeling a bit tired and need that last, fast burst of energy to ensure your victory, drinks full of sugar and caffeine provide the perfect
3. Burger and fries
A burger and fries provides you with carbohydrates and protein to keep you going for longer. As an added bonus, they are mind-bogglingly delicious!
To be fair though, I think that it’s important to add that there are obviously healthier, albeit less fun to eat, alternatives to the foods that made the previous list.
Fruit provides you with national sugars and vitamins that provide your body with energy and also, these nutrients are digested slower and therefore you won’t have to go through the terrors of a sugar crash. However, I think that it’s important to add that you should probably avoid eating too many oranges, raisins and prunes if you don’t want to end up with embarrassing and explosive diarrhoea – they are natural laxatives.
Eating fish will allow your body to absorb a bunch of delicious protein and Omega-3 natural fat and set the correct nutritional state for all-day gaming sessions.
3. Seeds and nuts
These provide you with proteins, fibres, natural oils and other nutrients and are good for sustained energy that allows you to game for long periods. To make these even more exciting, Jonathan ‘Fatal1ty’ Wendell has his own brand of nuts called “Gamer Food” and let’s face it, what could possibly set a better mood for pwnage than devouring some “Cashews of Chaos”?
As an appropriate end to this article, I would like to state that it’s important to remember that; no matter what you eat (healthy or unhealthy), you will still get fat if you eat to much of it and don’t move around. So please be sensible in your eating habits.
